How A Painting Transforms

This 48x36 Acrylic painting titled "Rise Up" began with a very colorful underpainting.
Because I was thinking of snow (!)  I wanted it to be quite neutral in the end, but with color peeking through here and there. This would (I hope) suggest all that is fall, but becomes winter with the first snow.
I thought it needed the structure of the diagonal lines , and when I added them it became "Rise Up"!

Quite often when I am inspired by something,  this particular thing will inspire an entire series. For instance I took some intriguing photos of rocks and water and then began thinking about the qualities of the water and its transparency and lack of transparency when it is reflecting something else. This inspired a rather lengthy series of paintings exploring this quality.
I then began seeing parallels between this transparency and reflectiveness and our lives. We often live a surface life and yet reveal little bits and pieces of our inner life as well, often depending on how close the viewer is. isn't this an interesting thought?!
Perhaps we can be encouraged to reveal more of our true self more easily.
